Maida is not dangerous per say, but eating too much of it can increase your risk of obesity and diabetes. There are many other health problems associated with overconsumption of maida. Maida is made of wheat germs. It’s actually another way to call refined white flour. It lacks fiber and other essential nutrients. Just so you know, carbs are the most abundant nutrient in maida. While carbs serve as an energy fuel, overeating will cause some to be converted into fat deposits.
Maida and atta
Maida and atta are different types of flour despite using the same raw ingredient. Maida is made from the endosperm of wheat grains. Meanwhile, atta is made from the whole grains. There are three main parts, namely the endosperm, bran, and germ. When none have been removed, it’s called atta. They have different uses. Atta is often used to make bread although maida is useful for this as well. Maida is more preferred because people think it tastes better. Therefore, it’s more widely used. But when it comes to health benefits, atta takes the cake for sure. It can provide more nutrients to the body.
Maida raises blood sugar levels
This is one of the biggest concerns about eating maida. Many food products we come across daily are made of refined flour. Thus, they can cause a blood sugar spike quickly if you don’t watch your portion sizes. This type of flour has a high glycemic index, which means it gets absorbed quickly by the body. This will eventually put stress on your pancreas because it needs to work harder to produce insulin. When the balance has been disrupted for a long period of time, it could cause diabetes. This is when the body can no longer use insulin properly.
Lack of essential nutrients
Adding maida to the diet may not put you at risk of nutrient deficiencies. However, it could be the case if all you eat is foods made of this ingredient. Cakes, pizza, burgers, and bread are some food products made of maida. They are mostly carbohydrates. If they are all you eat and none of the healthy foods like fruits and veggies are included, then the risk of deficiencies will surely increase.
It’s never good to eat the same type of foods all the time. All the aforementioned foods may have different flavors, but they use the same raw ingredient. The important compounds of wheat grains have been removed during the milling process, so you won’t get enough fiber by eating maida. Had they been retained, then the nutritional value would be higher.
It’s not surprising how eating wheat flour would lead to obesity because it’s mostly carbs. We often eat them disproportionately to other important nutrients. Carbs are broken down into glucose. And when there’s too much circulating in the body due to overeating, some will be stored as fat. The more carbs you eat, the more insulin will be released to keep your blood sugar in a healthy range. When the body is overloaded with insulin, it will trigger the conversion of carbs to fat. Over time, the extra weight you put on gradually due to this process will be very visible and it’s called obesity.
